INTERVIEW

1. How did you form the team for the competition?
Catalina Salvà and Hector Ortin formed their own studio eight years ago, with sites in Barcelona and Mallorca, since then they have been always working together.

2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?
The new metro station at Parc BIT is an opportunity to create a gate to the Serra de Tramuntana and a new centrality for Parc BIT. Through the creation of a square that will generate a new identity and the aim of improving relationships with the site as well as being environmentally friendly, the project is developed through five metabolic strategies: an exchanging square that connects all the existing and new paths and mobilities, a new identitary landscape made with the excess soils of the metro excavation, a reintroduction of a network of water features for the new agricultural parc, a self-managed and responsible food production and consumption, and a reduction of the emissions and optimization of the production of renewable energies.

3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
The reflection on the site was born, first of all, during the site visit with the Europan organization but also with the representatives of Parc BIT, Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) and Govern de les Illes Balears (GOIB), where we could understand most of the needs and requirements and find out the problems and shortcomings and even discover new ones. After that, we started a process of analysis, proposing, filtering and debugging ideas in the studio that allowed us to fulfill the requirements of the competition and also those the site demanded us.

4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
We had worked in other competitions trying out strategies to promote the resources of the site and, above all, proposing new public spaces as urban centralities. Our references from nowadays architecture and landscape were the Karen Blixens Plads and Nørreport Station both designed by COBE, and as an example of respectful with the site architecture Can Lis House by Jørn Utzon.

5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
As the metro line is an incoming reality, and was carefully defined before the Europan competition, we took it very seriously, but understanding the new station not only as a part of the infrastructure but related to the landscape, Parc BIT and UIB. We believe it is essential that Parc BIT, UIB, SFM and GOIB get involved in the project as the solution we projected connects all them in one single point.

6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?
We were winners in the past edition of Europan at the Platja de Palma site. Europan have yet allowed us to start working with public administrations and we hope that it will go on with the current edition.
