“Oldham Zipper” creates a new links between a predominantly Asian neighbourhood to the north and a mainly white area to the south. As both lack green spaces and amenities, this entry proposes a new square and a linear park to connect both areas like a zip, by appealing to both communities. A sustainable drainage system gives the development a distinct character. Rainwater is stored in ponds within shared courtyards and guided through runnels to soakaways in the park. Interpreting an architectural form present in many Islamic countries, courtyard houses have been grouped into clusters, aiming to make a clear distinction between public and private realms. Some houses are grouped around a semi-public zone, a safe area for women to gather and children to play. All houses are designed to expand and contract in response to changing needs, and the four to five bedroom units can be adapted to split the ground and upper floor into two apartments.
