INTERVIEW

1. How did you form the team for the competition?

One of our team members lives in a close neighbourhood of the project site. We have met at our university last year. We began to prepare a master's thesis on the area of the Warsaw Steelworks. When the competition appeared, we decided to collaborate. During our partnership we have met better and despite this short relationship we have achieved success.

2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?

Our project aims to show that urban and industrial areas can exist in symbiosis and complement each other. Using the communication potential, we create an intermodal port which will support road and rail transport –focusing on rail as more ecological. Cooperating with intermodal port, the warehouse for revitalization and reconstruction of containers creates the container village. This type of construction gives the opportunity to create a flexible, modifiable, and multi-functional structure. This space will primarily offer services, places to relax, office units, ability to organize concerts and other cultural events. Wanting to continue the idea of productivity we design the greenhouses which will provide food for the needs of the city. It will also create individual activities for the private needs. But first and foremost, it ensures shortening the food supply chain between consumers and producent. The main attractor of this space is an amusement park. It will refer to the industrial character of the area. And will be enriched by educational paths referring to the history and functioning of the steelworks.

3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?

In order to systematize the spatial structure of this part of the city and prevent its sprawl the steel industry should become an integral part of the production city district. The current steelmaking process is maximally limiting the pollution. However, the main design problem is the noise from the production. In order to solve it, the building layout was shaped in the way, that the designed free-standing volumes and building units have a noise-insulating function. The idea to integrate the steelworks' areas with the city assumed the use of naturally existing green corridors and locate areas for development between them. The greenery also emphasizes the importance of the border, understood as a functional transition between urbanized and undeveloped areas and not as barrier. Believing in the idea of the transition from a linear to the circular economy we present in our project the new recycling industry within the city itself.

4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?

No we didn't treat this issue previously. The main reference project was Landschaftspark Duisburg-Meiderich Latz + Partner.

5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?

It is true that implementation of this type of projects can only take place through negotiations. It is important to set priorities that do not undergo negotiations and changes. For us, the most important thing is that the steelworks is a functioning facility with the possibility of development and the areas around it can be productive and accessible to the public.

6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?

Yes it's our first time. I think it will be a important part of portfolio. The competition is known in whole Europe and it might help in the foreign career. Also it's a great experience to be a part of such an important issue like productive city.
