INTERVIEW

1. How did you form the team for the competition?

We have all been connected to Lund School of Architecture (Sweden) and enjoyed the collaboration within the group.

2. How do you define the main issue of your project, and how did you answer on this session main topic: the place of productive activities within the city?

The main issue of the site in Enköping, Sweden, was its lack of structure and lack of connection to the rest of the city. This car-dominated retail area led us to the definition of the site as a sea of asphalt. Though the site provided our team with many challenges we also saw a possibility present in the east; a green “prairie”. By letting this greenery unfold in horizontal cuts within the site, it could provide structure to the site but also provide a new take on the productive city; a productive park, making room for industry, retail, culture and housing, all embedded in the green wetlands.

3. How did this issue and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?

The commercial-industrial site offers business and production opportunities which contribute to the productive city, therefore the need for structure within the site to enable this was significant. The greenery that unfolds into the site best employs the city’s land, developing a coherent system of public spaces and a new form of structure.

4. Have you treated this issue previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?

Though all group members have previously treated the issue of connectivity and structure within industrial sites, the scale of the site in Enköping is unique to all of us. ;
The reference projects which formed the base for our work was “Ex-citizen” by Arenas Basabe Palacios, a critical review of suburban typology and “Parc de la Vilette” by OMA. Both of these reference projects mentioned dealt with rethinking and organizing a large scale site

5. Urban-architectural projects like the ones in Europan can only be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?

The process of the project implementation was an essential part of our project concept. We propose the process in three steps, starting with the “quick fix” initiated by local forces. These actions will result in a domino-effect, increasing the activity within the site over time as well as starting the more extensive interventions to gradually transform the site into a productive park.

6. Is it the first time you have been awarded a prize at Europan? How could this help you in your professional career?

It is the first time we enter Europan and also the first time we are awarded a prize for the competition. We hope that we with this entry will develop our knowledge about large scale city planning, knowledge which could be applied to various contexts in the future and transform more asphalt oceans out there.
