1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
Within the Colonie project, « Re-sourcing » operates at multiple scales: regenerating public spaces and creating a connection between the Colonie and the city center. It also relies on programming around plant-fiber crafts, such as training reed cutters, helping to regenerate landscapes and wetlands through skills transmission.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
The site raises the issue of reoccupying a neglected and damaged heritage asset with limited resources, preventing a conventional, one-phase rehabilitation. The project proposes a site-specific methodology, a new heritage doctrine based on restoration through use, relying on a controlled project economy and programmatic prefiguration. The goal is to neither demolish nor build.
PROJECT:
We belong to a generation of architects shaped by prefiguration projects on peri-urban and rural brownfields aimed at revitalizing territories, such as La Preuve par 7 at the Couvent Clarisse, a listed monument in Roubaix or Bellastock initiatives. Atelier Mura Scala is currently developing Bar au vent in Achères, a participatory construction project for a reused-timber hall and wooden shingle roof.
SITE:
The history of Jullouville is singular: developed by a real estate promoter in the early 20th century, it later hosted a holiday camp from a city of the Parisian “red belt.” The site’s pluralism allows the involvement of diverse public and private stakeholders, as well as building professionals, to achieve economic balance while ensuring a gradual opening. The scale of the Colonie also enables experimental frameworks, such as the architectural climatic device proposed in the project.
REFERENCES:
The team includes Atelier Mura Scala, part of the SANA incubator at ENSACF since 2025 and enrolled in the TechXX program on energy renovation of 20th-century architecture at ENSAV. Annabelle Hucault is an architect completing a DSA Architecture et Patrimoine at ENSAPB. We also collaborated with Timothé Cantard, an ecologist and geographer based in Brittany. The team’s interdisciplinarity brings together territorial revitalization, energy adaptation, heritage restoration through use, and biodiversity preservation.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
Being Runner- up for this project confirms our intuitions and the themes we wish to continue exploring. There is today a large amount of similar heritage, and as architects, we must support owners in regaining control to prevent decay or damage to architectural integrity. Europan offered the opportunity to engage multiple stakeholders, develop the program, and bring them together around a shared project, one of the architect’s fundamental roles. We are eager to continue this journey in the coming months.

We had already worked together previously. Léo Akahori received second prize in the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts competition in 2020, together with Barthélemy Ropert. Atelier Mura Scala carries out public facility projects for various municipalities in Brittany and the Paris region.
