1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
For nearly two centuries, the former metallurgical plant of Fumel shaped its territory, generating long-term soil pollution and leaving the site today in a condition of industrial wasteland. The F3 project proposes to work with anthroposol as a design and regenerative material, transforming the former ironworks into a plant nursery. By developing a vegetal production chain, the project supports soil remediation while initiating a new local, social, and ecological economy.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Embedded in the Lémance Valley, F3 repositions itself at the heart of an archipelago of polluted brownfields awaiting regeneration. Driven by the prototype of the Fumel Fertile Factory, the nursery acts as a lever for the remediation of the post-industrial landscape. Conceived as an open-air laboratory, F3 becomes a space of opportunity where experimentation can take place to heal the soils.
PROJECT:
The project draws inspiration from major references in the reconversion of polluted sites, notably James Corner’s work on Freshkills Park in New York and Catherine Mosbach’s projects, particularly the Louvre-Lens Park. The reflection on the fertility of anthroposols also builds on research conducted by the BASE agency in Lyon.
SITE:
Conceived as a realistic and collective project, F3 is based on public land ownership and a shared governance model involving local authorities, residents, artisans, and researchers. Structured as a living production chain—from depollution to implementation—the nursery enables a gradual activation of the site, addressing the challenges of the local economy.
REFERENCES:
Completely multidisciplinary (architect, landscape architect, and urban planner) and cosmopolitan (Catalan Provençal, German, Italian, and Berrichon), we met during our studies. After several years of professional experience and without having had the opportunity to work together, we decided to collaborate on Europan 18.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
Europan 18 represents a genuine springboard for any young designer. It offers the opportunity to test ideas, develop critical thinking and professional identity, while building meaningful connections. In the context of challenges related to rurality and the ecological crisis, this project provides a concrete and formative experience, allowing participants to tackle real and current issues.
