1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
Since the Industrial Revolution, modernity has instrumentalized the world. The utilitarian gaze fragments territories to resources, disconnects societies, and accelerates the ecological crisis. Existence of resources holds inherent value, independent of its utility. RETOUR À LA SOURCE is a manifesto of “de-resourcing”, to return to a place where nothing and no one is treated as a mere instrument. It’s a return to a state of symbiotic cohabitation with the living world. Our design regenerates on the basis of Grand Nancy’s past, reconciling with its industrial heritage while creating spaces for ecological restoration and social integration.

2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Grand Nancy developed on the Lorraine plateau rich in resources which made the region one of the main industrial bases of France. The development of the industry is at the cost of the exploitation of the landscape. With industrial decline, the site faces fragmentation and amnésie. To restore ecological and social bonds, we design three guiding principles as foundation: REWEAVE, EMPOWER & ENGAGE: REWEAVE the blue-green infrastructure and slow mobility, EMPOWER humans and non-humans, ENGAGE in the long-term development of the site.

PROJECT:

3. Have you treated these issues previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
Living as Asians in Europe allows us to observe society from its margins with unique clarity. Space is inherently political: it influences human behavior, social relations, and patterns of inclusion or exclusion. As designers, we believe our responsibility goes beyond shaping physical space. The philosophy of Lao Tzu, Hannah Arendt and Foucault have a profound influence on us. We want to create environments that foster cohesion rather than fragmentation. Our previous works, the design of the Acacias district in Geneva guided by an ecological, water-centered planning approach, and REWILDING BIJLMER addressing community care, also informed our design thinking for this project.

SITE:

4. How can your project be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
Time and phasing are integral to our design. RETOUR À LA SOURCE is conceived as a continuous, long-term process. It begins with immersion and community engagement through residencies and a pilot participatory project along the canal. This is followed by targeted spatial activation using key buildings as catalysts, then the establishment of east-west connections and an ecological network through water restoration. We envision the final phase extends these strategies to surrounding neighborhoods, enabling comprehensive urban renewal.

5. How did you form the team for the competition and if so what are the skills you associated?
We formed the team as a research and design lab united by our ambition to reshape public space and challenge the status quo. We believe in the power of the margins as a source of innovation, and in the strength of simplicity as a return to what is essential and grounded. Our skills are complementary: Danyan drives the team with holistic thinking, avant-garde concepts, and strategic vision; Jinyi brings poetic sensibility, strong design skills, and the ability to work across scales through powerful representations; Hongfei, as the architect, grounds the project in technical precision and constructive detail. Despite our differences, we share resilience, ambition, and strong execution, allowing us to work effectively as a fun and driven team.

6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
The prize helps us build networks and gain greater visibility. Winning the prize of Europan is an acknowledgement of our design and our capabilities. It strengthens our credibility, gives us confidence and motivates us to continue pursuing what we are passionate about.
