More Information

How can the site contribute to the productive city?

Near half of the Industrial Areal located in the centre of Kriens will be sold to an investor (Sector 1). The municipality can use its local planning to determine the possible uses. How can we make a craft activity located in the middle or even high price range connect with the industrial history and create a new identity in the city? How can we memorize the pipeline of the water flow currently buried under the asphalt? In the future, will Kriens have the opportunity to improve its "Aura" compared to that of Lucerne, the main city of the Canton, located in the vicinity of the well-known and majestic lake of the 4 cantons, considering its cultural assets "KKL - Kultur- und Kongresszentrum" (of international level) and attractive entertainment? Would the creation of a "productive" route through the centre of the city result in such a possibility for Kriens?

City strategy

The Andritz area is surrounded by current projects for the centre of the Kriens district. Together with the old Andritz area administrative building dating from 1896, there exists an original streetscape which bears witness to its industrial history of that time.
The development of the Andritz area offers the opportunity for sustainable town planning in the centre of the town, which respects the historical development of structures and allows traces of the industrial past to remain.
Development of a project in sector 1 and future extension of the concept to sector 2.
The estimated useful life of sector 2 is still undetermined. Therefore the complete district, should be to plan where the spirit of the industrial age is still alive and thus the history of the area continues to be written.

Site definition

The mechanical workshop was founded in 1855 by the goldsmith, August Bell.
The present Andritz area is right in the centre of the District of Kriens. It is the last large, contiguous industrial area in the centre which is still actively productive. The firm known as the Bell Machine Factory has a varied company history. The firm produced a variety of products, such as cable cars, steel bridges, looms and in particular, turbines. The large assembly and manufacturing halls, dating from various eras and erected according to practical requirements, dominate the site. Due to the projected outsourcing of part of its production to another site Andritz-Hydro no longer needs all the areas in the present operational premises.

How is Production Considered in the Urban Diversity Program?

A complementary concept of mixed use for living and working and productive open spaces. In principle, the intention is to produce a strong, lively blend of use with commercial premises, offices, restaurants, retail shops and cultural uses, with the highest possible residential ratio.
The uses of the buildings adjoining public places, in particular on the ground floor, should support this objective. A skilful user-specific open space concept should produce an attractive residential and working environment.
We recommend analysing the possible reuse of the existing buildings and to preserve them as long as they satisfy future requirements, from the functional and economical point of view.
Initially, the tender focuses on sector 1 in order to demonstrate the compatibility with keeping the operating part of the Firm in close proximity (sector 2). In the long-term, the development of the whole area (sectors 1 + 2) will favour the use of buildings for multiple purposes, subsequently allowing the performance of different activities.

How do they plan work with half space?

See "important" - page 1: http://www.europan-europe.eu/media/default/0001/15/e14_ch_kriens_sitevisitreport2_pdf.pdf

Is the factory producing only for Switzerland? How much noise does the activity produce?

a) Mostly Switzerland, individual projects for the surrounding countries

b) Purpose of the LSV: The Noise Abatement Ordinance (LSV) is an executive regulation of the environmental protection act (USG) and has the purpose of protecting the public from harmful or disturbing noise and avoiding unnecessary emissions as a precaution. The LSV recognises following action-priorities in this regard:

- Priority 1: Measures at the source
- Priority 2: Measures in the propagation area
- Priority 3: Measures in the building

Noise protection measures at the source: For street noise, the following possibilities for noise protection measures at the source exist: Speed reduction, truck traffic ban, ban on night driving, low-noise surfaces, bypasses, etc. Mainly technical noise protection measures (e.g. silencers) are available for industrial noise.
Noise protection measures in the propagation area: Noise protection walls and dams are available as protective measures in the noise propagation area.
Noise protection measures on the building: Measures in the building are defined as part of the special-use planning or building permit process. These include, for example, a building’s position, shape, layout orientation (spaces insensitive to the noise source, prevention of noise sensitive areas), balconies, recessed balconies, terraces, bay windows, screens etc.

Which of the existing buildings do have any underground floor(s)?

KB1 and KB2, BG-1 and BG-2, ZL. Various halls have locally small cellars and / or construction pits.

With regard to the rendering panels, are there any specific recommendations concerning the scales, formats or types of documents expected by the jury members?

Rendering is limited to 3 vertical A1 panels (59.4 x 84.1cm).
Regarding presentation, a 3 cm margin at the top and the bottom of each panel must be left free of any mark.
Floor surface area (by building) must be indicated in gross m2.
The colour grey (lines, outlines, readable...) must be used to draw existing elements and black used for elements of the project. The colour to be used is identical for each affectation and each participant have to respect these presentation rules for space distribution patterns accompanying plans, namely for: Workshops I Offices I Public I Accommodation I Other.
The 3 panels (A1 format) will feature the following points as a minimum:

- The exterior layout plan, on the basis provided by the organiser (p. 5/24) including at least the area defined as part of the competition, as well as any other element required for the understanding of the project on a 1/1000 scale (exterior layout).
- The orientation must be the same as the plan provided by the organisation, the plan framework is 35 x 35 cm
- The entirety of the project must be in 1/1000 including all levels, sections and elevations
- The plans and sections of new sectorial buildings, required for the understanding of the project on a 1/500 scale. Participants will adopt a clear and intelligible means of representation.
- All explanations useful for the understanding of concepts (architecture, construction concept, layouts, pats and circulation, fluid management, security concepts, etc.)
- Other documents to be provided: at the request of EUROPAN Europe

Is there any trace of the Krienbach under the Europan site?

Today there are no traces of the Krienbach or the former industial canal in the Andritz area. The stream had its lines in the year 1764 on the edge of the area towards of the hydraulic testing plant, machine factory Bell. The turbines of the hydraulic testing plant were not driven with water from the Krienbach, but with pressure line with water from the Bellenweiher. Today, the Krienbach flows in the canal under the Schappe Süd area > See plan on 0-New_Docs_After_Launch

We would like to know if it would be possible to get cad files of the pdfs at the end of the extended brief (building information, machines, etc)

No, unfortanetly these documents do not exist in CAD.

Is an exact date already known when Hydro-Andritz leaves Sector 1? Are there any ideas for the exact utilization horizon for sector 2 by the Hydro-Andritz?

Do exist digital ground plans from the existing buildings on the site? Are there plans in which the heights of existing buildings are apparent?

Unfortunately, we don’t have any digital plans for the existing buildings of the Andritz area. The plans of the administration buildings KB1, KB2 and Hall A as well as the TVA building can be found in the last pages of http://www.europan-europe.eu/media/default/0001/15/e14_ch_kriens_sitevisitreport2_pdf.pdf

According to the overview on page 14 is proposed for the buildings 8, 12, 13 to keep them, as long as they are in use? These buildings are subdivided both by sector 1 and 2. How must this be avoided? Can the premise be that the part in Sector 1 is available?

It is already apparent that the objective of the plot is broadly interpreted by placing a total reorganization of the area in the foreground. This re-planning of the planning process involves a complete demolition of all industrial installations, with the exception of the maintenance of the administrative buildings KB1, KB2 and Hall A as well as the TVA building. Halle 7 and BG-1 can be preserved at condition they find a content that enhances the neighborhood (for example hall 7: small business, collective facilities, event facilities etc.) > See important informations and plans here.

B. Halle 7: Kleingewerbe, Kollektiveinrichtungen, Veranstaltungseinrichtungen o.Ä.) > Siehe wichtige Informationen und Pläne.

On page 19, precise parking numbers are given for stage 94 PP and for final construction 232 PP. Is it possible to work with these figures as a basic assumption and to show roughly where these parking areas can be accommodated? The number of parking spaces can vary fundamentally depending on the concept and the proposed use mix.

A conceptual processing is sufficient, unless a specific mobility concept is designed.

Would it be possible to obtain a map with the situation of the underground canal network?

From Productive Area to Productive City
What kind of Urbanity for the Logistics & Industrial Areas?

What kind of Urbanity for the Logistics & Industrial Areas?

The contemporary city is divided between very active big box urbanism linked to all metropolitan networks and light industrial sites adjacent to city centres. They operate in isolation to their adjacent areas with mono-rhythmic uses.
The challenge is to inject new economies that would generate synergies between uses, but also porosities resulting into poly-rhythmic urban milieu. How to develop common shared spaces between users of diverse activities as well as with the inhabitants of the surrounding areas?
