1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
Our vision for Frøystad interprets “Re-sourcing” as a healing process for the town of Roa. The site is reimagined as a vital link between urban life and landscape, creating a continuous corridor between nature and the built environment. Organized around public courtyards and a civic center, the neighborhood prioritizes human interaction and social inclusion over vehicular movement. Developed in phases, it can adapt to changing needs and stakeholder input, becoming a resilient model for future growth and the long-term regeneration of Roa’s civic and ecological heart.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Our design addresses the site’s fragmentation and car dependency by creating a new center that reconnects Roa with its surrounding landscape and the Vigga River. Rather than a simple housing expansion, the project establishes a vibrant heart for the village. A walkable, mixed-use environment with improved mobility and diverse housing typologies, from co-living to senior residences, supports an active, intergenerational community. This transformation unfolds through a step-by-step process rooted in principles of circularity.
PROJECT:
Our approach to these challenges is rooted in the Danish design mindset developed through our professional experience at Cobe and Effekt. Working daily with urban regeneration and transformation has equipped us to address the site’s complexity with clarity and sensitivity. Our inspiration draws from the lived quality of public spaces in Copenhagen and its suburbs, enriched by references such as Nord Architects’ research on aging populations and the context-driven work of Reiulf Ramstad. These influences inform a proposal that is socially inclusive and rooted in its place.
SITE:
From the outset, our primary goal has been to ensure the feasibility and credibility of the proposal. The design is anchored in a clear phasing strategy, a thorough study of mobility and parking management, and a spatial layout that fully respects the site’s regulations and constraints. The program addresses all key stakeholders, prioritizing residents’ needs while aligning with the municipality and private investors essential to realizing the neighborhood. We look forward to the next phases to further refine the implementation process in close collaboration with Europan Norway.
REFERENCES:
We met during our first year at university, where a shared passion for architecture quickly evolved into a natural collaboration. Our team brings together skills shaped by studying and working in Copenhagen, Milan, and other European cities, combining an appreciation for Nordic design with a strong focus on urban transformation and contextual awareness. Living Roa became the opportunity to apply the spatial, social, and environmental values we share, marking our first experimentation as a team. Through Europan 18, we formalized our collaboration as ASBUILT workshop, a collective practice based in this shared vision.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
This runner-up award gave us the awareness that we want to continue in this direction and pursue this path, by participating in future competitions as a group and always keeping in mind how to improve and grow.
