1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
Our plan promotes resident-centered, multi-generational and care-oriented living environment. We restore the old stream, expand flood space as part of diverse habitats and recreation, and make stormwater a key asset. Inspired by the landscape’s history, we strengthen meadow, forest, and water networks and create spaces for gardening plots as a memory from the agricultural history of the site. We also propose temporary and new building uses and material reuse in the Resourcing and reusing hub.

2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
Before the competition, we were already familiar with the Vähäheikkilä site. Our approach was strongly place-based: analyzing local demographics and lifestyles and envisioning living and working environments and services for a sustainable, community-oriented life. We also studied on site the historical landscape layers and natural habitats and waterways within broader ecological networks.

PROJECT:

3. Have you treated these issues previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
We have addressed these same themes separately in our previous projects, building expertise along the way. Each design task is unique, and the site itself sets the framework for the plan.

SITE:

4. How can your project be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
In our competition proposal, we outlined a phased implementation plan that actively involves local residents. The process begins with a temporary planning office and community house in an existing building. A key focus is the aging population living nearby, supported by senior housing that enables people to stay in their neighborhood through accessible and community-oriented living.

REFERENCES:

5. How did you form the team for the competition and if so what are the skills you associated?
Tuulikki gathered the team. She knew Aura through scouting, and Moona through urban studies. We each brought our own areas of expertise, which complemented one another and formed a strong multidisciplinary team. In addition, we are all originally from the Turku region, making the choice of the competition site a natural one.

6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
Yes, of course! We have already gained new important contacts and increased confidence in taking on similar projects in the future.
