1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
An emergency situation doesn't call for a standardized technical repair. For Riez, the need is urgent to rediscover its roots, a narrative of the territory, the local materiality that makes it unique… Through a multidisciplinary approach, shared with all audiences, we aim to create connections and rekindle the residents' affection for their land. Our consolidation proposals are regenerative in that they implement virtuous processes for the Valensole Plateau.

2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
We have a certain restraint in the act of building, willing to implement only the absolutely necessary resources. In Riez, however, we are facing a domino effect that threatens the historic center. Our consolidation project aims to (1) be measured, (2) create meaning for residents, (3) use techniques that inspire the territory. Indeed, we propose innovative yet realistic uses of local materials: local wood, lavender straw insulation, gypsum slabs, pebble masonry...

PROJECT:

3. Have you treated these issues previously? What were the reference projects that inspired yours?
We are already contributing on a revitalization project for a “Petite Ville de Demain” in the south of France. In our projects, 90% of which involve existing structures, we systematically promote the use of local materials. In addition, to inspire an optimistic perspective on the vacant spaces in Riez's town center, we explored the principle of "positive subtraction" developed by Simon Teyssou [Atelier du Rouget].

4. How can your project be implemented together with the actors through a negotiated process and in time. How did you consider this issue in your project?
We believe in opening an immediate dialogue around the care for existing buildings - without waiting to bring together operational stakeholders.
Our project offers 3 immediate actions:
-    publishing a guide that highlights the beauty of what’s already here;
-    reopening the Atrium of the Hôtel de Mazan to host discussions;
-    constructing micro-architectures that expand the Riez experience.
These steps can precede the negotiation processes and will form the basis of the overall strategy.

5. How did you form the team for the competition and if so what are the skills you associated?
We all are architects, sharing offices in Strasbourg. Duc and Elias [Semper Vera] strive to create an architecture that is clear, rooted in its local context, a fertile ground for social activities. Emilie [TAENU] endeavors to craft solutions that transcend scale from broader landscape to the smallest architectural detail. Finally, Brice and Stéphane [SPANK!] integrate architecture, scenography, graphic design, and publishing skills. Their expertise will help raise awareness among all audiences about Riez Re-sourcing.

6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
We chose to work on this project because we were sensitive to the challenges facing the city of Riez and wanted to provide a collective solution that resonated with its local community. We are delighted that the jury appreciated our proposal and awarded us a special mention, which brings us valuable exposure. We hope that we can continue to support Riez in this consolidation process, that is both tangible and intangible.
