The choice of the competition plots is linked to the City project, “Barrios Productores”. The aim is to progress towards a change of model, based on the recovery and regeneration of urban voids, in empty or misused plots, through a strengthened dialogue between city and nature.

More-than-farming Madrid
A garden can change the life of a person. Farming can change life in the city. Urban agriculture, as a caring practice, can repair ecosystems, strengthen local food supplies and construct commons. But it must overcome an anthropocentric vision, fostering a symbiotic metabolism that enhances biodiversity. It needs to be more-than-farming. Implementations should be site-specific as well as network-specific. Taking San Blas neighbourhood as an environmental unit, the winning project “More than Farming Madrid”, considers latent resources expanding the activities around farming such as processing, distributing, recycling or cooking. Diverse farm-forms adapt in a "seed-stem" to various sites, members or schedules. Rooted in place, three scenarios emerged: caring neighbour-food, growing local livelihoods and biodiversity front yard.

URBAN AGRICULTURE AS A CARING PRACTICE
The contract negotiated by the team is structured into various chapters, outlining the stages to be undertaken jointly with the various stakeholders. The first stage began with a participatory process involving the local community, prior to addressing the preliminary design of two of the sites proposed as part of the competition.

Following the competition, the team was commissioned to produce a preliminary design for two of the sites proposed in the competition.
Participative processes
The first stage of the study was to organise a participatory process with the local community in order to gather the residents' expectations.
Participation of the Living processes
The project proposes urban agriculture as a caring practice able to repair ecosystems, strengthen local food supplies and build common goods. But it must also be able to promote a symbiotic metabolism that enhances biodiversity.
