Molfetta (IT)

SCALE L/L SIZE 35ha / 12ha

The city overlooking the sea has to take it back and «live in it». The waterfront reorganisation will represent the starting point to enhance the existing building estate and will have to be able to activate a process of transformation representing a chance of development and growth for the entire city.

Project - Ideas
SeaSide

This project aims to reconnect both waterfronts through the identifying element of the city –the sea– and valorise their identity: vocation for tourist, sports and seaside on the one hand, and religious, historical and productive on the other. The re-naturalization of natural elements, the enhancement of historical buildings as ex-colony, shipyards and Basilica of St. Maria dei Martiri, and the realization of more permeable spaces connecting in a cross the seafront with built fabric, define the project as functional and innovative, yet highly respectful of historical traditions.

Family: Urban articulations

Following the competition the city organised a workshop with the prize-winning teams to combine various ideas from the winner, the runner-up and one of the 2 special mentions.
A new masterplan resulting from the best suggestions emerged and a “WS -Results-Book” has been produced, allowing the Administration to include the regeneration of the waterfront in a 3 years’ implementation plan.

Two teams went on with the process. Mid-2017 the winning team is assigned to design the Eastern waterfront part while the special mention team develops the Western part.
The team developed a concept for the West part of the waterfront with four main elements:
1- Configuration Piazza Madonna dei Martiri as a new urban hub and an attractive centre for the city;
2- Reclaiming the coastline and direct access to the sea;
3- Restoring the direct relationship between the urban fabric and the sea line through the creation of new terraced spaces;
4- Configuration of Secca dei Pali's as a new urban hub and multifunctional space for the city.
The city approved the project designed by the Europan team. The construction management is carried out directly by the technical office of the Municipality of Molfetta.

Process

Category(ies): Co-creative processes, Collaborative processes, Direct order processes

Co-creative processes

Following the competition, the city organised a workshop bringing together the 3 Europan rewarded teams to combine their ideas and develop a masterplan for the regeneration of the waterfront.

Collaborative processes

The workshop brought together various local stakeholders and experts to help the teams refine their plan.

Direct order processes

Following this workshop, the city commissioned the winning team ("Hold the Line") to develop a study for the development of the Eastern part of the seafront, and the Special Mention ("SeaSide") team to develop the Western part. The city is currently creating public spaces in the Western part based on the study by the Special Mention team.
