The relationship between the city of Teruel and the landscape of “La Vega” is mainly visual. The railway track and the road have isolated the activity produced inside. The aim of the project is to integrate “La Vega” into the life of the city, not only physically by making it accessible, but also in a way that reflects the surroundings through a diversification of activities, leisure, sports, cultural activities and economic development. And not only in terms of functionality, but through environmental and economic resources, and different uses of the land for educational, tourism and research purposes. Nature is the new focal point of the city, which hosts new activities whilst maintaining its agricultural character. The project is a close look at the site to identify the genius loci.

2010-2012
The team signed a commission very soon after the competition to transform the prize-winning project ideas into urban proposals for the Master Plan Review.
The study focuses on protecting Vega and managing the city limits. For this reason it has been expanded from competition’s 85 to 550 hectares, for development in phases.
The project proposes to integrate the space into the city socially, economically and culturally by strengthening its identity through 4 vectors:
1. Producing proper access through the Vega.
2. Reclaiming the River environmentally and conditioning it for public use.
3. Consolidating traditional agricultural uses by improving environmental and economic sustainability.
4. Injecting new public activities.
After they submitted this first study, political changes both in the municipality and the autonomous government interrupted the process.

This project is connected to the following themes

Mobility - Social Fields

The transformation of the former rail tracks into an ecological park reflects the shift of the role of infrastructures in the city. A network of footpaths and cycle tracks is an invitation to explore the riverbanks.

Housing - Typology

The variety of housing typologies developed by the project runs between city and nature, illustrating how the coherence of a territorial-scale proposal can be applied to architectural-scale building design.

Nature - Limit / Reconnection

More than a boundary, the linear park becomes the central component of the place. The river is transformed into an attractive area through a series of interventions to create diversity (allotment gardens, local production, park, etc.).
