Genoa’s situation entails two of the biggest problems of the contemporary city: land consumption and increasing private mobility (closely related to urban sprawl). The proposed strategy is twofold: densifying to prevent sprawl and intensifying the urban system to generate habitability. In both cases, public space is essential. In a critical situation, the easiest solution is the “tabula rasa” but it is more efficient and meaningful to give value to what already exists. The abandoned industrial areas and the “Dighe” are important references for collective identity, so the real challenge – socially and economically – is to improve, to transform if necessary, and to reuse. The verb “graft” in the title emphasises the concept: to instil new potential, like an old plant that gives new fruits.

This project is connected to the following themes
Mobility - Urban Generator
A monumental building and a corresponding public space highlight the new high-speed train station, while a promenade on the roofs of the existing buildings forms a pedestrian bridge linking both sides of the valley.
Shared spaces - Link - promenade
In order to transform a problem urban zone, the project reuses the existing fabric and provides a walkway linking the roofs of two buildings.
Nature - Proximity / Horizon
The aim of the operation on the building is – through a series of additions (creation of a public rooftop walkway, balconies forming extensions to certain apartments, etc.) and subtraction (creation of micro public spaces at the heart of the building) – to recreate an intermediate scale between residence and horizon.
