1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
The territory of Mallorca faces human pressures that threaten its landscape heritage. “La Fábrica del Paisaje” regenerates the island’s landscape by defending the traditional dynamics that shape its anthropomorphic territory. Es Sindicat becomes a hinge between the city and the countryside, restoring the ecosystem and reconnecting citizens, memory, and landscape through a space dedicated to both culture and architectural and landscape heritage.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
The project rehabilitates Es Sindicat and its surroundings as a public space, based on the traces of the site itself, revealing its preexistence and uncovering its memory. It pays tribute to the natural, social, and cultural heritage landscape of which it is part, while adding a contemporary layer committed to responding to the climate crisis. The rehabilitation is acupunctural and sutural: it restores and reconstructs the damaged elements, returning the building to its essence.
PROJECT:
We have treated the issues previously across three formers Europan awarded projects, related to Re-sourcing, to the care and to previously Aulets.
SITE:
The project is based on the involvement of traditional economic actors who have shaped the anthropomorphic character of the local landscape. The cultural center’s program is enriched with spaces dedicated to research, production, awareness, and connecting these professional actors with the local population, tourists, and artists. These new programmatic elements are integrated both within Es Sindicat and within the productive ecosystem of the new adjacent landscape space.
REFERENCES:
We are two architects, Spanish and French, who met in Paris and with projects in both countries. Shaped by our respective influences, our approach is based on the history of places, community life, and respect for inhabited landscapes. For us, architecture is both an expression and a driving force for the ethical construction of territory across local architectures.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
The team composed of Nathanaël Pinard, representing architectural company Atelier Carré Noir, and Ana Isabel Muñoz Sánchez is considering a long-term partnership in the future through a shared structure in order to develop our practice in both France and Spain. This prize represents a first step for our joint practice in architectural and urban design in Spain. We hope it will open doors to future projects that are ambitious both in terms of climate and social impact.
