1. How do you define the main issues of your project in relation with the theme “Re-sourcing”? Re-sourcing thanks to nature, to social dynamics, to new materiality? In which way do you think your project can contribute to an ecological and/or social evolution? And in which way do you think your project can be called a “regenerative project”?
The name of our project itself comes from the word “recoser” (to sew back together): we reuse existing gaps in the city to create new 15-minute neighborhoods, eliminating existing barriers, reconnecting points, and improving circulation between them. We take advantage of these new connections to bring greenery back to the city and promote internal activity in each gap. The materials used come from the town, taking advantage of local materials and through actions that will always benefit the inhabitants of Navalmoral de la Mata. That is why it can be considered regenerative, as the main issue is to bring life back to forgotten spaces, prioritizing the expansion of nature and public use.
2. How did the issues of your design and the questions raised by the site mutation meet?
This project is located in Navalmoral de la Mata, a town that is in danger of being divided by the new AVE high-speed rail lines. Our project takes this new problem as an opportunity to create new spaces for the town around the tracks and enhance the empty spaces that are in danger of falling into disrepair due to their proximity to a barrier in the town.
PROJECT:
We had never really dealt with this type of problem in a project before. However, we know of several cases where this type of problem has ended up dividing cities and causing neighborhoods to gradually shut down, creating abandoned spaces in decline. We understand the importance of avoiding this urban planning problem from the outset. That is why we consider it essential to carry out a detailed urban analysis and be able to respond to the needs of the people.
SITE:
We have always been clear that in order to achieve a project that could be implemented in Navalmoral de la Mata, we had to prioritize small actions throughout the city that did not require a large investment but would make a difference in terms of citizens' everyday use. Being able to tackle these interventions at the same time as the AVE works are carried out will be the most practical and viable option for the city.
REFERENCES:
The project was executed by one of the leaders of the flow81 team and one of its working architects. After years of working together, we decided to enter this competition.
6. How could this prize help you in your professional career?
Yes. It may not always be possible to devote valuable time to a competition, as it requires time and resources that a firm may need for other projects. This honorable mention recognizes the value of working on urban projects that we all need as citizens, and that only architecture firms can promote in an analytical, functional, and always innovative way.
