Europan 11 Wittstock

winner

Wittstock has a mediaeval centre that is almost completely preserved. Outside of this, it is a heterogeneous urban entity. The town structure, which has been maintained for centuries, is the motive for dealing with processes of growth and shrinkage within.
The Deutsche Bahn buildings are currently idle. The aim is to reactivate the homogenous historical area while preserving its substance. So the railway building will become the location for cultural events to boost the area supra-regionally. The Berlin-Wittenberge railway optimizes public transit flows. A network of bicycle lanes not only links with the surrounding municipalities, but also connects to national bicycle routes and therefore strengthens the Brandenburg region’s tourist appeal. The historic core town, dominating the inner part of the city, creates clear street-walls, which are also recreated in the Werderstrasse by construction along the streets. The diverse building in the inner area not only generates a new quality of usage, but the identified intra-urban spatial reserves also offer great potential for enlargement.

This project is connected to the following themes

Habitat - Contextualized morphology

A new residential fabric is infiltrated in the heart of the city to revitalized it. The compact development follows the principles of the existing urban figure, consolidating the space of the street and colonizing the interior of the blocks with a stripe-like configuration of patio houses.
